MR. STENGEL: I had retired. My wife called me. I was moaning in my sleep. My wife called me, and says, "Wake up, you are dreaming"; and I was dreaming, and as I woke up I heard a slight crash. I paid no attention to it until I heard the engines stop. When the engines stopped I said, "There is something serious; there is something wrong. We had better go up on deck." I just put on what clothes I could grab, and my wife put on her kimono, and we went up to the top deck and walked around there. There were not many people around there. That was where the lifeboats were. We came down to the next deck, and the captain came up. I supposed he had come up from investigating the damage. He had a very serious and a very grave face. I then said to my wife, "This is a very serious matter, I believe." . . .
Shortly after that the orders were given to have the passengers all put on life preservers. I went back to my stateroom and put a life preserver on my wife, and then she tied mine on. We went back up to the top deck. Then I heard the orders given to put all the women and children in the boats and have them go off about 200 yards from the vessel.
SENATOR SMITH: Who gave that order?
MR. STENGEL: It seemed to me an officer. Of course I was a little bit agitated, and I heard them and I did not look particularly to see who it was. While they were loading the lifeboats, the officers or men who had charge of loading the lifeboats said, "There is no danger; this is simply a matter of precaution." After my wife was put in a lifeboat she wanted me to come with them, and they said, "No; nothing but ladies and children." After the five boats, I think it was, or the boats as far as I could see on the starboard side, were loaded. I turned toward the bow. I do not know what led me there, but there was a small boat that they called an emergency boat, in which there were three people, Sir Duff Gordon and his wife and Miss Francatelli. I asked the officer—I could not see them, it was so dark, and I presume I was agitated somewhat—I asked him if I could not get into that boat. There was no one else around, not a person I could see except the people working at the boats, and he said, "Jump in." The railing was rather high—it was an emergency boat and was always swung over toward the water—I jumped onto the railing and rolled into it.

M. STENGEL : j’étais allé me coucher. Ma femme m’a appelé. Je commençais à m’endormir. Nous ferions mieux de monter sur le pont. » J’ai juste mis les vêtements qui étaient à ma portée, et ma femme a mis son kimono, et nous sommes montés sur le pont supérieur et nous avons marchés. Il n’y avait pas beaucoup de gens dans les parages. C’est là que se trouvaient les embarcations de sauvetage. Nous sommes descendus au pont suivant, et le capitaine est monté. Je croyais qu’il était revenu d’une enquête sur les dommages. Il avait un visage très grave. J’ai alors dit à ma femme : « C’est une question très sérieuse, je crois. » [...]
Peu après, on a donné l’ordre de à tous les passagers de mettre des gilets de sauvetage. Je suis retourné dans ma cabine et j’ai mis un gilet de sauvetage sur ma femme, et elle a attaché le mien. Nous sommes retournés sur le pont supérieur. Ensuite, j’ai entendu les ordres de mettre toutes les femmes et tous les enfants dans les canots et de les faire descendre à environ 200 mètres du navire.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Qui a donné cet ordre?
M. STENGEL : Cela me semblait être un agent. Bien sûr, j’étais un peu agité, et je les ai entendus et je n’ai pas cherché à savoir qui c’était. Pendant qu’ils chargeaient les embarcations de sauvetage, les officiers ou les hommes occupés à charger les embarcations de sauvetage ont dit : «Il n’y a pas de danger; c’est simplement une question de précaution.» Après que ma femme a été mise dans un canot de sauvetage, elle a voulu que je vienne avec eux, et ils ont dit, "Non, rien que des dames et des enfants." Après, les cinq canots, je pense que c’était ça, ou les canots pour autant que je pouvais voir sur le côté tribord, ont été chargés. Je me suis tourné vers l’avant. Je ne sais pas ce qui m’a amené là-bas, mais il y avait un petit canot qu’on appelait un canot d’urgence, dans lequel il y avait trois personnes, Sir Duff Gordon et sa femme et Mlle Francatelli. J’ai demandé à l’officier — je ne pouvais pas les voir, il faisait si sombre, et je suppose que j’étais un peu agité — si je ne pouvais pas monter dans ce canot. Il n’y avait personne d’autre autour, pas une personne que je pouvais voir sauf les gens qui travaillaient sur les canots, et il a dit, "Sautez dedans." La rambarde était plutôt haute — c’était un canot d’urgence qui était toujours balancé au-dessus de l’eau — j’ai sauté sur la rambarde et j’ai glissé.
